1
The importance of thorough prep work for the exterior of a heritage home cannot be overstated. Heritage homes, with their unique architectural features and historical significance, require special attention to ensure that the painting process preserves their character and longevity.

2
Heritage homes often feature unique architectural details that contribute to their historical significance. Thorough preparation ensures that these details are preserved during the painting process, maintaining the home’s authenticity and historical integrity.
3
Exterior surfaces of heritage homes are exposed to the elements, making them susceptible to weathering, decay, and damage. Proper preparation, including addressing issues such as peeling paint, cracks, and wood rot, enhances the durability of the surfaces. This protection is crucial for the long-term preservation of the home. Priming all peeling areas, and caulking any holes or significant cracks should be done before any paint is applied.

4
Identifying and addressing structural issues during the prep work helps prevent further damage to the home. This includes repairing any wood rot, addressing water damage, and ensuring that the underlying structure is sound. Preventing structural issues contributes to the overall stability of the heritage home.
5
Heritage homes, particularly those built before regulations on lead-based paint, may pose safety hazards. Thorough preparation, including lead testing and abatement if necessary, ensures the safety of both occupants and workers. Compliance with safety standards is essential for the well-being of everyone involved.

6
Proper surface preparation, such as cleaning, sanding, and priming, creates an ideal surface for paint adhesion. This ensures that the paint adheres evenly and effectively to the exterior surfaces, leading to a more durable and aesthetically pleasing finish.
7
A range of weather conditions, including rain, sun, and temperature fluctuations are all factors to consider. Thorough preparation, combined with the use of the highest quality paints and finishes, enhances the exterior’s ability to resist weather-related damage. This is crucial for protecting the home’s exterior surfaces over time.

8
Heritage homes often have specific color schemes that contribute to their historical significance. Accurate color matching is important. This attention to detail is essential for maintaining the original character and charm of the home.
9
Inadequate preparation can lead to premature paint failure, including issues such as peeling, cracking, or blistering. Thorough preparation addresses underlying issues and provides a solid foundation for the paint, reducing the risk of paint failure and the need for frequent repainting.

10
A heritage home with a well-maintained and carefully painted exterior enhances its curb appeal. This, in turn, contributes to increased property value. Potential buyers and preservation enthusiasts often value homes that have been properly cared for and maintain their historical charm.
11
Investing time and effort in thorough prep work of a heritage home can lead to long-term cost savings. Preventing structural issues and ensuring the durability of the paint job can reduce the need for frequent repairs and repainting, ultimately saving on maintenance costs.

The importance of prep work for a heritage home lies in its role in preserving historical integrity, ensuring surface durability, preventing structural damage, adhering to safety standards, and enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal. A carefully prepared exterior not only protects the heritage home from the elements but also contributes to its long-term sustainability and value.

We know the key to a long lasting paint job is in the prep work. At Parkside Painting we have a motto, It’s 90% prep and 10% paint. This is the most important aspect of a paint job. For heritage homes we recommend never to pressure wash, instead hand cleaning will provide optimal results without risk of damage to any siding or trim. This step alone can double the lifespan of your paint project.
Once the washing (or hand cleaning) is done then begins the scraping and sanding. There really isn’t any great replacement for sanding. Some clients have asked us to just scrape their home. “My last painter just scraped my house” and sadly that is why the paint job only lasted you a couple of years. If you have loose edges, and you have a difference in mil thickness, you have to sand down those edges with an orbital sander. This takes time and this takes a considerable amount of work but that’s what is going to give you a durable long lasting finish.
One of the key things when you consider hiring a painting company to look at for an exterior paint job is how much time are they going to spend with electric sanders sanding the surface of my house.
Another overlooked factor is the type of primer that is used. 95% of the homeowners we meet say “are you going to prime my house” and they just want to hear us say yes. But they don’t take the next step and ask what we are going to use to prime your house. In exterior painting it’s important to use a slow drying oil based primer. Even if your contractor says oil based primer, more than likely it’s a fast drying oil based primer, which is what most of the manufacturers are really marketing the most and pressing off their shelf the most because it dries quickly and it allows you to apply a finish coat faster.
The problem with that is it does not soak deep enough into the surface. So your paint job is not going to last as long, so you really want to use a slow drying oil based primer. If you clean the surface, sand properly, and you use a slow drying oil based primer, you’re going to have great results.

Our strict hiring policy ensures your house will be painted only by experienced professionals from start to finish. Selecting the right paint is essential, considering factors like climate, durability, and color. High-quality paints like those offered by Sherwin Williams offer superior protection against fading, peeling, and other weather-related wear.
Just like anything else a proper process is critical for a successful painting project. We need to be mindful of weather conditions, and always avoid painting in extreme heat, direct sunlight, or high humidity. These conditions can substantially reduce the longevity of your paint job.
We recommend starting from the top and working our way down. This helps avoid streaks and ensures that any drips won’t mar already-painted areas. It’s best practice to apply thin, even coats. We always ensure multiple coats are applied, never fewer than two.
Allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next one. Allowing sufficient drying time is important before removing any painter’s tape or protective coverings. Rushing this step can lead to smudging or uneven results.
What sets apart our painters from others is their attention to trim, doors, and other details. We always use drop sheets to ensure no paint goes anywhere unintended and painters tape is used to achieve clean lines and ensure a polished finish.
11
After completing the painting portion, the crew initiates a thorough cleanup. It is also at this stage our production manager thoroughly goes over the site with our Foreman to spot any touch ups.

Once the touch ups have been made then cleanup begins. This includes removing painter’s tape, removing any scaffolding or boom lifts from the site, removing drop cloths, and ensuring that the homeowner’s property is returned to its original condition.

10
Lastly, a final walkaround is conducted with the homeowner. This provides an opportunity for the client to review the completed work, point out any concerns, and ensure that the finished product aligns with their expectations. If any areas are identified that require touch ups, these issues are remedied at this time. Remember, we don’t collect any payment until you’re 100% satisfied with the work.

Erica Chan2024-09-26 Great communication, engaged, caring and supportive customer service, really great experience with parkside. Would highly recommend them for anyone looking for a good home painting experience in Victoria. morley cooper2024-09-22 Excellent job. Efficient and friendly to deal with. Good quality work. Would use again. Harald Krebs2024-09-17 Parkside Painting just completed a repaint of our stucco and trim. The prep, including scraping of stucco and wood, was thorough, and the finished paint job looks beautiful. Areas that had looked a bit shabby are now gleaming with new life! We are very happy with the result. Dan, our painter, was meticulous, hard-working and quick, plus being a nice person, whom we were happy to have at our place. Other staff members with whom we had contact (Mike, the manager, whom we saw in person several times; and Sunny, who sent well-written daily updates with photos) were also a pleasure to deal with--always friendly and professional. We warmly recommend Parkside Painting! marnie bradfield2024-08-21 Our highest praise for Parkside Painting. We’ve had two contracts in the last couple of years. This company is professional and delivers excellent service and product . From the initial quote, daily progress reports to the final “walk through” we could not be more satisfied. This last job required repair and restoration and Dan, a painter/artisan was able to resolve issues that went well beyond the original contract. I so appreciated. Parkside’s /Mike’s/Dan’s ability to reschedule our job as I had given them dates that ultimately did not work well for me..in terms of overseas guests. What a relief to have professional assistance with competence and consideration. We would highly recommend this company for your next painting project. You will not be disappointed! Kent Green2024-06-19 We had Parkside Painting prep and paint all the window and door trim, soffits and some siding on our 1933 home, and they did a great job. As an architect, I have a list of good contractors in town and I know other good painters, but we were in a hurry to get started and those others were many months or even next year away, so we listened to Mike from Parkside who carefully measured up the scope of the work. 1. He gave us a price with various qualities of materials from good to excellent for us to choose from, within 24 hours. 2. They shuffled there schedule and crew to start that week. 3. The crew was courteous, professional and personable - no foul language, no getto blasters blazing. 4. They kept us informed of there timing and process, and we recieved written progress reports daily. 5. The prep work was thorough, and any anomalies were brought to our attention with proposals for solutions for our consideration. 6. The work was efficiently organized to account for the weather forecast. 7. The minor changes to the work were fairly accounted for and easy to arrange. 8. The job was finished a half a day early, and we are very happy with the result. 9 The 4 day stay in a resort offer is a bit gimmicky. I doubt it will turn out to be a BIG 6 Motel along side a freeway, but even if that turns out to be so, for the reasonable price for an excellent experience and paint job, I would hire Parkside again. francie howard2024-06-19 Quick, efficient, seems knowlegeable, but not cheap Tiffany G-S2024-06-18 We recently engaged Parkside Painting to paint several areas (both interior and exterior) of our heritage house and Dan did a fantastic job. In addition to painting, they installed a backsplash in our bathroom and a concrete door sill at our basement door. Throughout the entire job they were professional, prompt, courteous, had clear communication, and executed high-quality work. Parkside delivered on what they said they’d do at the price we were quoted. We appreciated the daily updates. Would definitely recommend. Thanks to Mike, Sunny and team!! Jane Moran2024-06-14 Good communicators before during and after the job. Performed the work as promised on time and budget. Kept work area very clean. Would highly recommend. Mike Woods2024-05-29 We recently had our house painted by Parkside and could not be more pleased with the service from the prompt estimate with choices to the care and attention to colour selection. Nick was a pleasure through the painting process, helpful and skillful. We enjoyed the nightly text updates with pictures and the high level of service at all times. We are very pleased with the outcome Jayden Zhu2024-05-25 Mike and the Parkside Painting crew did an incredible job to paint external of my house. Highly recommend them. Thanks Parkside!!!
